GMC Terrain Oil Type

Adding oil to engine

What kind of oil does your GMC Terrain require? More recent GMC Terrain models use SAE 5W-30 full synthetic oil or SAE 0W-20 full synthetic oil. However, it’s important to remember that the specific type of oil your GMC Terrain needs will depend on the engine, year, and trim of your vehicle. The service team at Champion Chevrolet has put together a helpful guide on how to properly care for your GMC Terrain SUV’s oil.

Take a look at our helpful guide to GMC Terrain oil care, and then schedule a GMC Terrain oil change at Champion Chevrolet!

Synthetic Oil Vs. Conventional Oil

If you saw the term “synthetic” above and weren’t sure what that meant, don’t worry. We’re here to clear up the air about synthetic oil and why it’s important. There are essentially two types of oil that every Louisville driver uses: synthetic oil and conventional.

Here are the differences between both types of oil:

Synthetic Oil

  • Mixture of conventional oil and artificial chemicals
  • Lasts longer than conventional oil
  • Usually more expensive than conventional oil
  • Typically meant for high-performance vehicles

Conventional Oil

  • Natural oil that’s made from minerals in the ground
  • Lower cost than synthetic oil
  • Doesn’t usually last as long as conventional oil

Most synthetic oil comes as either fully synthetic, which isn’t mixed with conventional oil, or as a synthetic blend, which is synthetic oil and conventional oil mixed together. You can have our service team install the proper GMC Terrain oil type, or you can order the oil you need from our parts store.
